I am trained in Person-Centred Therapy and and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Shapiro, 1987 therapy and I offer both counselling and psychotherapy which are often interchangeable.
Counselling provides a safe, impartial and confidential space in which to explore your feelings. Talking to a professional in a confidential setting, safe in the knowledge that what you say will be respectfully listened to, can sometimes help us to understand what is making us feel a certain way.
However, with psychotherapy I can work at a deeper level, often uncovering the deep-rooted reasons why you feel and behave the way that you do.
I have professional indemnity insurance and am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP Registered Member: 402271), adhering to their Ethical Framework. I am also a member of EMDR UK (Membership No.: BO600) and adhere to their Code of Conduct.
I began working in the field of mental health in 1984 and am a Registered Mental Nurse. In my 30+ years I have worked in all areas of mental health, including several years in secure facilities.
This has allowed me to understand all aspects of mental ill health and the related treatments. I understand the reasons why life events and relationship difficulties can often lead to mental illness if left untreated.
Working on a one-to-one basis or during group therapy sessions with clients was always the most rewarding part of my nursing role, so I always knew that I would train as a therapist offering counselling and psychotherapy. My specialist areas of interest and experience are trauma, substance misuse and addictive behaviour.
I enjoy learning and continue to enhance my knowledge base and practice.
In my free time, I have many interests, particularly reading both factual and fiction, creative writing, music concerts and stage shows, gardening and travel. I practice yoga and enjoy going on a retreat abroad, at least once a year. I love animals and enjoy long walks with my dog.
